Blue Ai Ye - Bei Ai (Artemisiae argyi Folium)

from $27.00

Steam distilled Artemisiae argyi Folium
(Mugwort leaf, Argy wormwood leaf)

This beautiful light blue colored Ai Ye which comes from the north of China, is a chemo-type of Artemisiae argy called “Bei Ai”. The essential oil of this Artemisia argyi, picked and refined during the Dragon Boat Festival in June, is light blue. Sometimes, due to the timing of the weather conditions, the light blue color will increase. After the Dragon Boat Festival, the essential oil of Artemisia argyi leaves appear light green.

The medicinal properties of Blue Ai Ye essential oil is similar to the, “yellow” Ai Ye from Hubei province called “Qi Ai” which is offered in the Alchemica Botanica line. However its blue color suggests a stronger affinity to the Liver and the Wood Element, and its pungent, earthy aroma is slightly softer.

Ai Ye is deeply warming. Its Yang energy warms and regulates the blood especially related to the  menstrual cycle and to the production and release hormones. Its pungent quality also warms and opens the lungs to free breathing and resolve congestion.

Ai Ye has many uses in gynecology and obstetrics including regulating menstrual bleeding, cramping, pain, infertility, and stabilizing pregnancy for example. Ai Ye essential oil stimulates FSH and LH.

Hypoactive pituitary gland with symptoms like poor appetite, low libido, dull headaches, low stamina and endurance may be aided with the use of this essential oil.

Benefits for the skin include eczema and itching.

Artemisiae argy is also an effective insect repellent.

Practitioners may consider blending with Gan Jiang (zingiberis) essential oil for prolonged uterine bleeding due to cold and with Xiang Fu (Cyperii), Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum walliciii and Dang Gui (Angelica sinensis) essential oils for abdominal pain and irregular menstruation due to cold and deficiency.

For fertility, combine with Rose essential oil which helps to increase sperm and egg counts.

Essential oil of Ai Ye has been shown to be helpful for various respiratory disorders such as cough, phlegm, wheezing and allergies. Used topically (always diluted properly), or inhaled (see Chinese Medical Herbology and Pharmacology, Chen and Chen, pp 600-602 for details.)
