Suan Zao Ren (Semen Zizyphi spinosae)

from $30.00

CO2 extracted Zizyphus seed, spiny date seed

The rich, complex aroma of San Zao Ren is sour, musty and smoky, embodying Five Element correspondences to the Liver, Spleen, Heart and Kidney. When inhaled deeply its effect rises to the temples and into the brain where it brings about a sedating, almost hypnotic quietness.

Ziziphus spinosa is a unique, small fruit tree which grows wild on plains, sunny hillsides, cliffs and bare hills in Northern China. It is a hardy, heat, drought and cold tolerant plant and can grow in nutrient-poor soils. Its fruit is rich in nutrients and mineral elements, such as calcium, phosphorus, and zinc. Its fruit, seeds, roots and even bark are used as medicine.

Suan Zao Ren’s main action is to calm the spirit. A disturbed spirit may manifest with emotional or mental symptoms including insomnia, difficulty falling or staying asleep, dream disturbed sleep, irritability, anxiety, depression, excessive worry, and forgetfulness.

The literal translation of Suan Zao Ren means “sour date seed”. This sour quality is what accounts for its  consolidating, nourishing benefits for the blood and yin which, when insufficient, may be the cause of a disturbed spirit as well as physical symptoms such as fatigue, sweating, palpitations, dizziness, etc.

For problems with sleep, Suan Zao Ren may be used alone or combined with other essential oils such as Bai Zi Ren (Biota Seed) Xie Cao (Valerian) or Wu Wei Zi (Schizandra).
