Gynostemma pentaphyllum is an herbaceous climbing vine of the gourd family. Its serrated leaflets grow in groups of five and it bears an inedible purple gourd. It is native to and widely distributed throughout Southern China and East Asia. Considered an “immortal herb” in China. It has several common names showing its popularity: five-leaf ginseng, poor man's ginseng, miracle grass, fairy herb, sweet tea vine, gospel herb, and southern ginseng. The earliest record of its medicinal use was in Li Shizhen’s Compendium of Materia Medica

Our CO2 extracted Jiao Gu Lan offers a fresh herbaceous aroma with a slightly bitter edge. Its color is an opaque olive green. It has a rich consistency which still drops easily out of the bottle.

Jiao Gu Lan has great therapeutic value as an unusually versatile tonic. Although it is in the Chinese medicine category of herbs that Tonify the Qi, which it does effectively to the point of being considered anti-aging, it has other properties which, when combined with that of generally nourishing and strengthening the body, make it an extremely valuable medicine. In recent times there has been a great deal of research done to discover its many therapeutic actions. Additionally, as an essential oil it affects the level of Jing Essence effectively reaching deep, chronic issues involving the constitution.

Jiao Gu Lan moistens the lungs when heat or chronic illness has injured them. It generates important body fluids which help to soften and dispel the accumulation of phlegm. It also effectively clears heat, eliminates toxins and reduces inflammation. These properties combined make Jiao Gu Lan useful in reduction ofswelling, and pain as well as resolution of tumors, nodules, cysts and ulcers of various types.

Gynostemmas’s anti inflammatory action has proven its potency in treatment of inflammatory syndromes of the gastrointestinal tract such as gastritis, gastric or duodenal ulcers, as well asthe urinary tract such as cystitis. This herb has also been shown to be a pre biotic.

As a topical application, Jiao Gu Lan’s essential oil will transmit these anti inflammatory, moisturizing and and restorative properties to benefit the skin as well. For this purpose it may be added to facial creams, oils or lotions. For example, add 5 drops of Jiao Gu Lan per 15ml of our Rose Facial oil.

Jiao Gu Lan lowers blood pressure, and cholesterol and helps to regulate blood sugar. It is widely used in Chinese medicine to treat cardiovascular diseases.

Placed neat on acupuncture points, Jiao Gu Lan’s deeply tonifying effects will be absorbed directly into the channel systems.

Jiao Gu Lan has become popular with veterinarians who have found it to be of great value in the treatment of laminitis, as well as other benefits.

Recent studies, as reported by the NIH, have shown Gynostemma’s potential as an anti cancer agent and indeed is used in Chinese herbal medicine to treat various kinds if cancer and to inhibit the spread of tumors.

A paste made with Jiao Gu Lan essential oil applied on the skin helps to lighten dark spotsand may be combined with Bai Zhi (Angelica dahurica) and Rose essential oils to enhance this effect.
