Poria cocos is a wood-decay fungus mushroom with a subterranean growth habit manifesting in its Earth element affinity. It develops a large, long-lasting underground sclerotium resembling a small coconut. The outer white part is valued in Chinese medicine to resolve dampness by strengthening the Spleen and moving water through the Kidneys while the inner dark part is prized specifically for its Shen spirit calming function working on the Heart mind and emotions.

Our CO2 extracted Fu Ling essential oil is made using both parts of the plant combined to produce an oil light gold in color with an easily pourable consistency. Its aroma is mild and reminiscent of rooty earth. When deeply inhaled, its gentle aroma seems to travel both upward and downward simultaneously, softly stimulating the highest aspect of the upper Jiao and the lowest aspect of the lower Jiao.

Fu ling essential oil is a valuable addition to blends when strengthening the transforming function of the Spleen and digestion is the goal. To address this type of Qi deficiency consider combining Fu Ling with essential oils of Bai Zhu (Atractylodes) Ren Shen (Ginseng) and a little Gan Jiang (Ginger).

To address Shen Spirit disturbances manifesting as insomnia and palpitations consider combining with the essential oil of San Zao Ren. If caused by phlegm obstructing the heart, combine with Shi Chang Pu (Acorus) and Yuan Zhi (Polygala) essential oils.

Placing the single or blended oils on appropriate acupuncture points will allow for absorption directly into the channel systems.

Pharmacological research has shown Fu Ling to have diuretic as well as sedative properties.

Recent studies demonstrated that lanostane triterpenoids in Poria cocos significantly increased collagen and hyaluronic acid levels in cultured human skin cells and are believed to ameliorate aging skin.

This very well may signal a benefit to including Fu Ling essential oil in cosmetic skin creams or lotions.
