The aroma of Gu Sui Bu essential oil is strong and sweet with a fermented burnt scent reminiscent of soy miso paste. When inhaled directly, it combs against the nasal passages and throat, warmly reverberating inside the temples and skull, then diving deeply to penetrate the bones. This CO2 extracted oil is dark opaque brown in color with a viscous yet pourable consistency.
A hardy plant, Drynaria grows in shaded areas of the mountains and deciduous forest regions of China and has a thin wooden stem with fern-like green fronds branching out. Gu Sui Bu is the rhizome of the plant, known to prefer growing on rocks and trees rather than in the soil.
As its name suggests, Gu Sui Bu supports the bones and promotes bone density. In Chinese medicine, it is praised as one of the primary herbs that can be used for relieving pain and promoting the mending of broken bones as well as other traumatic injuries such as contusions, sprains and ligament damage. It dispels blood stasis, treats swelling, eases pain and controls bleeding (including bleeding gums), thus it is an essential herb for healing after surgery. Interestingly, Gu Sui Bu has been found to have the pharmacological effect of increasing bone absorption of calcium. Paired with other essential oils such as Bu Gu Zhi (Psoraleae) and She Chuang Zi (Cnidiium) it can assist in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis by increasing bone mass density. Applied as a compress, these oils help to speed the healing of broken or thinning bones.
Gu Sui Bu’s major function is to Tonify the Kidney Yang which in turn supports the bones joints, teeth and hair.Drynaria treats Kidney deficiency symptoms such as gradual loosening of teeth and toothache, sore and weak back and knees. Gu Sui Bu is also indicated for other Kidney Yang deficiency syndromes such as frequent urination and diarrhea as well as hair loss.
To address the teeth, Gu Sui Bu essential oil diluted in untoasted sesame oil may be applied directly on the teeth and gums or swished in the mouth along with other essential oils such as Ding Xiang (Clove) and Mo Yao (Myrrh)
Since the Kidneys open to the ears, Gu Sui Bu also directly benefits auditory function overall, and gradual hearing loss and tinnitus specifically. For this, it may be added to our Source Blend an applied over the Kidney treatment areas of the lower back and on acupuncture points around the ears and auditory area of the brain.
Topically, Gu Sui Bu may be applied externally on affected areas for joint pain and swelling. Its Liver affinity extends its healing affects to the sinews as well for injuries and pain of the tendons andligaments. A lineament can be prepared using other essential oils in vodka or Everclear as a base. For joints, consider the addition of Yun Shan (Black Spruce) and Du Huo (Angelica pubiscentis). For sinews, with Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum wallicii) and Dang Gui (Angelica sinensis).
To stimulate hair growth and treat alopecia, this essential oil may be combined with that of Ce Bai Ye (Biota Leaf) and Gan Jiang (Ginger) or fresh ginger juice as a stimulating scalp massage or as an addition to other hair treatments.
